A new computer that will work with all the old adapter cards designed for earlier versions of the computer is called backwards compatible. The same goes for a new piece of software that provides the same functions as the previous version and can read the files created in the previous version. For example, Windows 95 is backwards compatible with the old Windows 3.x since it can run the same programs.
